The wonderful thing about this series is that author Con Riley sets us up in each book with an MC that will appear in the next. In this case in "His Compass" she gave us both Kier and Mitch sitting next to each other on Tom and Nick's boat with Tom's brain afflited brother Justin just beginning his risky journey of leaving Haven, the community for afflicted people. And that's where we pick up this tale.That Mitch is Justin's long-time caregiver and Kier, who was left at the altar by his fiance a year before, is absolutely hostile to Mitch at first sets us up for a convoluted, yet extremely serious, tale of love lost, love explored and love found. You can't do better than that in my book--unless the prose is superior, and in this one it's off the charts in that respect.Kier is a tough nut to crack in many respects, especially if a reader is looking for a sympathetic character beneath a veneer of almost permanent scowls. That he has a boom best friend in Charles the ex-aristocrat who shares his London digs while bedding half the male population, gives us a hint of what might happen in this one, and what we might expect thereafter.Charles refers to Mitch as the Lumberjack, which is how Kier has described this handsy, sexually prolific but also deeply scarred and reticent individual. What roads they travel within the blessedly scenic and welcoming Cornish countryside gives us deep insights into this area of England and penetratingly detailed insights into the hidden fears and motivations of our leading characters.That Tom, Nick and Justin are around to serve as buffers (along at crucial times with Rob and Jude from the first book) while Charles flaps in and out of the journey (and with Kier's ex-fiance also showing up in a super plot twist) sets us up perfectly for a finish that is delicious.And we get all the hints we need as where the next tale will take us as well.
