While thousands of books have been written about Abraham Lincoln since his death, few authors have tried to identify the factors contributing to his success. After his assassination, Lincoln’s professional peers recorded the details of Lincoln’s career before his presidency, as an attorney and politician; and, this anecdotal information provided by educated professionals is generally considered reliable. What is absent from the body of Lincoln bibliography is an analysis of how Lincoln achieved success in measuring the pulse of emotions and beliefs of his constituency, how he developed the skills to articulate his views, what enabled him to be nominated and elected, and what enabled him to provide the leadership to allow the Union to continue the fight and eventually survive. Many of the traits, which contributed to Lincoln’s political success and historical greatness, were with him since birth. Lincoln’s ethical standards, his core values of right and wrong, were apparent throughout his personal, professional, and political life. Lincoln displayed strong leadership skills throughout his adult life. His talent as a raconteur, which drew many peers into his circle, was a skill that if not genetically acquired, was learned at an early age. By the age of 30, he was one of the most prominent and successful politicians in Illinois. However, Lincoln’s only federal office, before election to the presidency, was a 2-year term in the House of Representative in the late 1840s. When he returned home from Washington after that service, Lincoln was washed up as a politician; and his aspirations for a U.S. Senate Seat in the 1850s were thwarted. These attributes contributed to Lincoln’s success, but they were not the critical skills, which caused Lincoln to rise to prominence in the 1850s, capture the popular thought in the North, win the presidency and then lead the union through the hellish years of war and eventual peace. The greatness of Lincoln was his ability to understand people and the human condition, and to articulate and communicate his ideas and policies to the people. Abraham Lincoln lived, worked, and campaigned in a political climate that was very different from the media driven cult of personality of our contemporary politics. Few voters ever heard politicians speak. Candidates for office communicated their views and policies through speeches or writings, in newspapers or pamphlets. These communication skills, which Lincoln used so successfully, were not acquired through his political career, but rather through his career as an attorney. Abraham Lincoln spent the majority of his professional life as an attorney. In his day, Lincoln’s professional peers considered him one of, if not, the best jury trial lawyer and appellate lawyer in Illinois. Lincoln’s election to the Presidency would not have happened without his legal career. The initial purpose of this book is to discuss the development of that career. The converse is also true: one cannot fully understand Lincoln’s growth as a lawyer without understanding the political climate and issues of his time. The political issues of the 1850s were legal issues debated publicly by lawyers. The political debates about the expansion of slavery were not debates about the morality or practicality of slavery, but rather whether the federal government had the legal right to restrict slavery in the new territories.
