“A house divided against itself cannot stand. I believe this government cannot endure permanently half slave and half free.” - Abraham LincolnWith these words, Abraham Lincoln began his Senate campaign in 1858. Lincoln was a tall, skinny, rawboned man with scraggly black hair. These words were the first steps to a crusade to save the Union and, some say, democracy itself. Lincoln defined democracy as, “… the last, best hope of earth.” With his integrity, his simple eloquence, his conviction of purpose, Lincoln is a revered figure. Lincoln worked as a shopkeeper and lawyer. His entry into politics came later in his life. Lincoln was a self-taught lawyer with unfailing integrity, and his clients called him “Honest Abe.” It was these qualities that made him one of those most revered Americans of all time. Lincoln was the greatest Commander in Chief in American history. Lincoln is the only president in American history whose entire administration was consumed by war. When the war started, Lincoln was as green as any new recruit. He had to fashion an army almost from scratch. The Union Army's senior leadership didn’t have the will or the talent to suppress the rebellion. Lincoln took a more active role.Lincoln invented the role of Commander In Chief. In 1861 the Constitution, nor any existing legislation specified how the President was to wage war or dictate strategy. Lincoln defined and executed for the first time in our nation's history the role of Commander in Chief. During the four years of Lincoln’s time in the White House, almost all his time and energy was spent managing the Civil War.Lincoln fired generals that failed him. Lincoln saw the war evolve. He knew a full-scale effort was needed to crush the Confederacy to preserve the Union. By early 1864, Lincoln had his dream team of generals in Grant, Sherman, Thomas, and Sheridan. These Union generals won the war by capturing or destroying enemy armies. Lincoln said, “… as Commander in Chief of the army and navy, in a time of war… I have a right to take any measure which may be best to subdue the enemy.” Lincoln’s use of his war powers as president established the conduct of other presidents in wartime. The Civil War was the greatest crisis the United States ever faced. The Civil War was not a war between the states, or even between sovereign countries. The Civil War was a war of treason and rebellion. The governments of 11 Southern states tried to secede in 1861. One brave man, Abraham Lincoln, stood in their way. Lincoln met the chief challenge of his life and the life of our nation. It was his wise use of his war powers as Commander in Chief and his courage as a man that preserved the Union.
